One of the most celebrated DJs, John Peel was Radio 1’s longest running on air personality from 1967 until his death in 2004. If no one else would take a chance on a band or artist, John Peel would… including taking a chance on David Bowie. His “Peel Sessions” usually featured four live in-studio songs by artists, which gave fans unique versions of their inevitable favorite tracks.

The last in our Tour Across America series gives us songs that are about or mention American cities, states… and one zip code.

Did you know? Zip codes in America were first used in larger cities in the 1940s. By 1967,Ā zip codes were placed on all mail within the US. In the early 198os we began “Zip +4” – the little four digit code that helps keep mail delivery… zippy!

Watch the 1960s promo video for zip codes hereĀ and the Zip Code song here!
