Generations of Love

Posted: January 31, 2014 in Uncategorized

A listener wrote and asked why I have yet to play Culture Club and/or Boy George. My bad! Given Mr. O’Dowd was a sun-of-a-lover back in the day (and now still, I imagine!), how could I not include him in the V-Day show coming up on the 14th? 🙂

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

To be honest, my wife and I do not. It’s a money-making holiday created for you to gorge on sweets, overpriced food, cards, feigned affection and to spend ungodly amounts of money on factory flowers that die within a few days.  It’s an opinion… but is it really? Shouldn’t you love year round without having to be directed? Just sayin’….

Anyway, here’s a list of every day love in my life:

– My wife. I love her every single day!

– My furry sons. I love them every single day!

– Music. A lifelong love that never dies.

– Being my boss. A love-hate, that one! 😉

– Art. Total expressions of love, up to interpretation, of course!

– Friends. A solid love.

– Spicy foods. Love with sometime-consequences.

– Political books. Passionate and sometimes maddening love.

All of this to say that SUBCULTURE’S V-day show will be one of love, longing, remembrance, fuck you and power. I hope to bring you powerful songs and powerful women voices in honor of, “V-Day” and “ONE BILLION RISING.”

So join in on the love, won’t you? 🙂 Friday, February 14th at 8pm.

It’s not Whitney, stoopid!

Posted: January 24, 2014 in Uncategorized

Getting older, and especially with today’s “Today if not sooner” society, I defend what I’m quite positive generations before have had to defend time and again: The Originals.

When I was growing up, I know The Bauhaus didn’t originate, “Ziggy Stardust,” Bryan Ferry didn’t pen, “Jealous Guy,” The Carpenters weren’t the true authors of, “Ticket To Ride,” The Go Gos didn’t originate, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” and Japan was not responsible for, “All Tomorrow’s Parties.”

However, in today’s feeble world of, “ONLY MEEE…. wait. SQUIRREL!” (which is so much worse than the 80’s ‘me’ generation IMO), those fukkers don’t have a clue as to what’s what.

Anyway, we were in the “Hippie Mart” yesterday when we heard a kid school another kid on the version of, “I Will Always Love You,” that was playing overhead. “Dolly Parton wrote this song!” She said, as she dashed the dreams of her fellow worker who said the country bitch had ripped off Whitney Houston. Whitney, she said, had not in fact written the song for the soundtrack,  The Bodyguard. Good on you, grasshopper!

And so it is with the song, “Mad World.” Although Gary Jules managed an even more depressing version for the movie, “Donnie Darko,” The song MAD WORLD belongs to Tears For Fears. The song appeared on their 1982 debut album, “The Hurting,” re-released recently with remixes and B-sides. Tears for Fears is cool. I don’t know who Gary Jules is except that he made a mighty fine version of, “Mad World,” and that he’s not its originator.

Hear the real, solid version of MAD WORLD tonight on Subculture!

p.s. Ceelo Green/Gnarls Barkley did not write the song, “Gone Daddy Gone,” nor did the hipster kids from Hahvahd Squayah (for the locals 🙂 )

Swing it!

Posted: January 17, 2014 in Uncategorized

Seriously, my wife is most amazing. As much as a music junkie am I, it is SHE who finds the finds. We’ve been checking out this place in Easthampton, MA that hosts amazing dance parties, films, brunch, and fine foodage. The name of the place is POPCORN NOIR. Mixology classes, incredible films and food, dance parties, congregating… I’m pretty sure this place was MADE for you!

This week they are hosting a party pour moi, dontcha know! Oh, I jest… kinda. But seriously, my eyes well up whenever and every time I hear Swing music. Equally, my buttocks catch a groove every time a I hear an electronic beat. Mix the two together and you’ve got… “Electro Swing!” HOLEEEE SHIT!

And this is just what Popcorn Noir is hosting this week in dance: Beginning at 10pm this Saturday, January 19th, you can experience the best in Swing and Electro Swing music with Ms.Playlist.

Tonight we toast the party on Subculture with Swing Republic’s,
“Peas and Rice.” It’s awesome… just awesome!

Good, good stuff coming up on this week’s program and coming soon…

TWO HOURS OF DURAN DURAN. (You’re shocked, I know.)

For the newbies here,  I am a full-on Duranie and have been for many, many, many, many frickin’ years. They were a big part of the reason I got into music, radio, and producing. I have barrels full of memorabilia & collectibles, all of my tattoos are Durand-out, I was lucky enough in my career and as a fan to interview and meet them many a time, and in case you haven’t noticed, 95% of SUBCULTURE shows begin with a Duran Duran song (and that’s a fact!)

When I was a teen, my room was plastered ceiling to floor with Duran Duran posters. One day, having had enough, my mom threw back her arm and swiped all of the posters down, ripping them to shreds. (Seriously, as a teen, this was the most devastating thing ever, right?) LUCKILY, 25+ years later, my posters (and a whole lot more) returned… in the form of an amazing four-pound book.

Thank you *Durandy*, Andrew Golub. Thank you for releasing perhaps the most awesome reminder that Duran WAS NOT a boy band, but were (and remain) pioneers of modern music. If you have not snagged your copy yet, I urge you to purchase Mr. Golub’s amazing book, “Beautiful Colors: The Posters of Duran Duran,” right now. It features a foreword by Nick Rhodes and pics of posters you will remember, wish you had, and will look to collect.

HOLD IT! Simon and me in Boston. Yerp! 😉

The Reason For Leonard Cohen

Posted: January 9, 2014 in Uncategorized

This week you will hear Cohen’s classic, “Everybody Knows,” in the midst of a bit about music and sex and AIDS. With an abundance of songs pertaining to AIDS & losing loved ones and the tragedy of it all, I could not choose one, or even thirty songs to play so I chose, “Everybody Knows,” because of its straightforward message that sometimes shit is bad… really, really bad. You can choose to do something about it. Personally since I was a teen, I’ve lost 5 friends to the complications of the AIDS virus and it sucks. Big time.

So, even though I’ve enjoyed making the, “Sex In Music,” show and love to love with the love, AIDS is still very much real. Please be careful. There are those of us out there that love you.
